Globetrotters' Japan: People, Foreigners on the Tourist Circuit in Meiji Japan :

 1.  THREE takeaway points from the essay.  These should be points that you find to be of particular interest with regard to the representation of Japan in this context

1-During the late 1800's a fad called "Globetrotting" became a thing. It's the idea that people take guided tours around the world stopping at various locations , along with this company's popped up in order to help people who wanted to do it.

2-Globetrotters were interested in buying images of Japanese places and people that best represent their experiences and meet their expectations.

3-In Japan guidebooks the most common ads were for photography/souvenir photo album companies .

2-TWO images from the unit. Please write an analysis that encompasses both a visual analysis of the image and a content analysis that addresses the "politics of representation" as seen in the image.  (The "politics of representation" has to do with ways in which meaning is constructed/conveyed through visual media or language, utilizing the various things we have discussed thus far, including ideology, coding, and myth.)  

I chose this image because i loved the a happy picture full of roses in her dress in her head and where she sat even the wall has the reflection of flowers , so to me she just look like a rose between roses , a tourist may like to buy this just to see that beautiful Japanese ladies in a special position with and old music instrument surrounded with flowers.                                                                                                  

This is an exotic picture that looks like an illusory picture kind of old road dusty and barbaric , this picture shows a bizarre place looks like forest , what attracted me in this pictures is the view of this plants divided by that dusty road where we see only two men . no animals i was expecting to see animals there instead of men . this look weird to me it s just an illusory .I think a tourist may be interested to buy it because it s an exotic picture and very rare to see something like this and it's difficult to be understood and interpreted it s a mysterious picture .

I am a tourist who is interested in Japanese food and traditions . I pretended I have been in to Japan  and here what i have I seen during my journey which was just amazing i Below some pictures of my wonderful journey in Japan . 

 Sushi is a Japanese dish consisting of a vinegared rice called shari combined with another ingredient called neta that is usually raw fish or seafood . It's so delicious .

This is Wagashi is a traditional Japanese confections that are often served with tea, especially the types made of mochi, anko (azuki bean paste), and fruits. Wagashi are typically made from plant ingredients.

Ramen is a Japenese dish made from pasta and fish or meat or both meat and fish , often seasoned with miso  or soy sauce imported from China in the realy twentieth century,

 Sumo is a traditional combative Japenese sport that is well known throughout the world .Most Rikishi ( Suumo wrestlers)are professional competitors weighting 100 to 200 kg.  The professional Sumo tournaments take place six times a year for 15 days each in January ,  May and September at Ryogo Kokugikan in Tokyo , March in Osaka , July in Nagoya  , and December in Fukuaka .                                                                                                                              

This picture is Mount Fuji located on Honshu Island , is the highest mountain in Japan . It's one of Japan's three Holy mountains . It' s a well known symbol of Japan , and special place of scenic beauty.                                                                                                                                      

My album focuses about Japanese traditional food , because through food we get to know the traditions and customs of the country , and sport to get close to the youth , places to give us the desire to travel and explore the beauty of Japan .                                                                                                

Gazes

1.  Write at least three things that you take away from the article.  These should be major, significant points that you found to be thought-provoking and/or helpful in analyzing and understanding Beato's photography : 

The article mentioned different gazes , and how people differ from one an other having 

different minds .

It showed as well that men and women have different viewing ideology .

Gives the example of citizens and savage to talk about the issue of taboo and open .

2-With reference to some of the concepts you acquired from the article, copy two photographs from Beato's album into a post on your personal blog and present your analysis.  You should give as detailed an analysis as possible, but put an emphasis on your analysis of the "gaze" as it relates to the article, including "the non-Western subject's gaze," but also including "the reader's gaze," as well as any other gazes that you find relevant.

I chose this picture because it represents the traditional cloth in Japan this woman represent Japanese culture through her dress and the way she made her hair . as well as that two mirrors which I don’t understand what they meant in here . But what I like about this picture is that Despite the rage of   western culture Japan did not lose their  traditions 

The second picture is this barbaric one about violence and punishment in Japan  

Felice Beato's Japan :

    

1 -  Give three important things (concepts, ideas, etc.)  that you take away from the essay.  These are things that should be helpful as you continue to think about the visual culture of Japan and what can be called "the politics of representation," which has to do how such things as myth and ideology and codes appear in images and their captions.

- Beato shows many pictures of Japan ,which does not  focus on facial expressions as Ukiyoe , But rather he hilighted the history of Japan much focusing on the reality .

- Since Japan was influenced by the rapide rate and the westerner culture this pictures shows how Japan was before being influenced and changed by Westerner Culture her the example of Yokohama .

2-.  Upload the two images that you have chosen to your personal blog.  Give your analysis of the image, and your "critical analysis" of the captions.  Be on the lookout for any language or ideas in the concepts that may seem to represent myths, ideological prejudices, or coded language (sort of like the "dog whistles" of contemporary politics).

This picture was taken of the Harbor at Nagasaki . Beato described it as the most beautiful ports in the world . And as we see this is before the influence of the European culture . Beats clearly mentioned that when he said the westerner culture is about to force itself in Japan . 

This is shocked picture about the execution where the victim is tied hands and feet and covered eyes , this is shows how they use to perform the punishment in Japan which i find disgraceful and shows no mercy .

  This is the image i selected because it shows clearly the different nations ( you can identify them through the clothing India with the turbine in their head ....) This picture emphasis  as well the role of the body language at that time before the introduction of the dictionary .

This print is titled "Picture of Mercantile Establishment in Yokohama " the issue of this picture is about the establishment of merchant in Japan ,I chose it because i was very attracted by the colors used in this paint which make a harmony in the picture . also i saw people wearing color cloths similar to American  flag .Anyone who is interested in history can purchase it , to me it s a flash back to Japanese history at its thriving peak .

This print is titled Display at Nishi Ryogokui . In this picture we saw a big tiger attacking a rooster .
I chose this print because it s appealing and descriptive . the tiger is the symbol of power , the artist aim is to present Japan as a powerful as the Tiger . I think this may be purchased because at that time people love to have domestics home so this picture will be unusual for them and they may love to have it . 

The Artwork i chose to analyse is the portrait of Hiroshige by UTagawa Kunisada , who was born in 1786 in Honjo , his father was an amateur poet of some reown died after his birth. And while growing up he developed an early talent for painting and drawing . Kunisada was a trendstter in the art of the Japanese woodblock Print . He countinousily developed his style and he did not adhere to stylistic constaints set by his contemporaires , his productivity was extra ordinary .
This artwork "Hiroshige " is among his three best representatives of the Japanese color wood cut , and this work was submitted to a re evaluation .
the First thing attracted me in this paint is the colors , this represents an old man with a traditional cloth in a very bright colors the green and red and mostly and green is a symbol of life where as red is symbol of resistance .
the man looks like  a religious man with that thing in his hand which is used normally by religious people and the way he is setting looks he is in a deep reflection .
